Originally from Kosciusko, MS, Dr. Bruce completed his undergraduate education at Mississippi State University and received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He completed a straight surgery internship in Houston, TX, then joined the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam with the U.S. Special Forces. There he wrote the Cambodian Village Hamlet Medical Program and the Cambodian Medic Manual. Dr. Bruce was in charge of training Cambodian combat medics and also helped his unit train the Cambodian army in tactical operations and government affairs. For this, he received the Legion of Merit award from the U.S. government.
After leaving the military service, Dr. Bruce completed his residency in Memphis, TN, and following that was board certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
1975 to 1986 – Practiced Ophthalmology in Oxford and Greenwood, MS.
1976 – Became one of the first ophthalmologists in Mississippi to use intraocular lenses.
1986 – Moved to Jackson to join Omega Health Systems and served as the National Medical Director and on the Board of Trustees. Omega Health Systems became one of the largest ophthalmologist referral networks in the country. During this time, he assisted in training optometrists in Mississippi, Iowa, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Oregon as they became certified to use ophthalmic medications.
1992 – Re-introduced phaco-emulsification in Mississippi for small incision cataract surgery.
1993 – Obtained the Jackson Eye Institute from Omega Health Systems.
1997 – Started one of the first single specialty ambulatory surgical centers in Mississippi.
